Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, sits at about 1,800 m above sea level, and it is where most travellers land before a safari. The city can be covered in one or two days: it has a national park a few kilometres from the centre, a giraffe centre, an elephant orphanage, museums and Karen Blixen's house. The business district is dense and congested; most of the sights are in the south-west, towards Langata and Karen.

Tips
- Traffic is the main problem: allow for long journeys between the centre and Karen or Langata, especially at rush hour, and group your visits by area. Uber and Bolt are widely used; see our guide to the airport and the city centre and the tips on scams and safety. To plan a full day, read Nairobi in one day.
How to get there
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is about 18 km south-east of the centre. See from the airport to the city centre.
