Nairobi National Park: a safari 7 km from the city centre, fees and tips
Nairobi National Park, run by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), is a real safari park about 7 km from the city centre, with the skyscrapers in the background. You can see lions, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, hippos and black rhinos; there are no elephants. The southern side is unfenced and opens onto the plains where animals move with the seasons. It is the easiest safari to fit into a stopover or a half day.
Highlights

Buffalo and the city
The savannah and the Nairobi skyline in the same frame, the park's classic photo.

The giraffes
They are common in the wooded parts of the park.
The black rhinos
The park is known for its rhinos; they are shy, and a guide helps to spot them.
The Sheldrick orphanage
It is inside the park: see the Sheldrick elephant orphanage.

Tips
- The entry fee is set by KWS and has changed: it was USD 43 per non-resident adult; a rate of USD 80 was announced for 1 October 2025, but a court suspended the increase and we could not confirm its status at the time of writing. Check the current rate before you come; payment is by card or mobile. A vehicle with a pop-up roof or a guide is recommended; a 2 to 3 hour outing is enough. Organised tours often include the transfer and the guide; see also Nairobi in one day.
How to get there
The main entrance (Main Gate) is on Langata Road, about 7 km from the centre. By taxi or ride-hailing from the centre, allow 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.
