Safari to Tsavo from Mombasa or Diani: duration, prices and lodges
Tsavo is the big park closest to the coast, which makes it the natural safari for anyone staying in Diani, Mombasa or Malindi. Operators leave from coastal hotels and mostly offer Tsavo East, which is closer, sometimes Tsavo West; they sell 2- or 3-day packages (we found no day trip to Tsavo from the coast). The prices below come from offers found in October 2026 and vary with the season, the vehicle and the group size. For the parks, see Tsavo East and Tsavo West.
Highlights

A lodge's waterhole
Some lodges and camps have a waterhole where elephants come to drink in front of guests, from the terrace or the tent. It is a good reason to spend the night on site.

The Tsavo River and the western landscapes
If the programme includes Tsavo West, ask for Mzima Springs and the Ngulia rhino sanctuary before booking.

Tips
- Prices found per person: 2 days and 1 night about USD 370 to 640 for offers from Mombasa or Diani, often without the park entry fee; 3 days and 2 nights about USD 670 to 1,600 depending on group size (cheaper from five or seven people) and the lodge. The park entry fee is USD 80 per adult for non-residents according to the current rates: check whether it is included. Also check meals, water, the vehicle (minibus or pop-up-roof 4x4), the exact lodge and the number of game drives. The road is long: a 2-day trip is not a restful safari, a 3-day trip is a better compromise. Do not buy from a touter on the beach on the same day: book a registered agency with recent reviews. For a stay mixing safari and beach, see Diani Beach and Mombasa.
How to get there
The operator picks you up at your coastal hotel. The Mombasa-Voi road takes about 2.5 hours to Voi, then there is still the track to the lodge; from Diani, allow more. Departure is early in the morning. Luggage must fit in the vehicle: bring a soft bag.
