Diani Beach stretches for some twenty kilometres of white sand south of Mombasa, facing the Indian Ocean behind a coral reef that shelters the lagoon. It is the most convenient beach resort for extending a safari: an airport a few kilometres away, hotels for every budget, boat trips and small coastal forests to explore. The resort runs along a single road parallel to the beach: you get around by tuk-tuk, motorbike taxi or car, and each hotel has its own access to the sea. Prices and hours quoted: October 2026.
Highlights

The beach and the lagoon
Pale sand, warm water and fishing boats on the reef: swimming depends on the tide, because at low tide the water retreats far from the shore; check the tide times with your hotel before planning a long swim.

Sunrise
The beach faces east: sunrise over the ocean is the quietest moment, before the heat and before the roaming vendors arrive.

Camel rides
Camels wait for visitors on the sand; the ride is a beach classic. Agree the price before getting on and refuse to prepay a vague package.
Kitesurfing and water sports
Diani, with Galu Beach to the south, is a well-known kitesurfing spot: a shallow lagoon and steady winds from June to October, then from December to March according to specialist guides. Schools rent equipment and give beginner lessons.
Kaya Kinondo forest and colobus monkeys
Kaya Kinondo is a sacred forest of the Digo people, the only one of the area's sacred forests open to visitors, with a guide. The Colobus Conservation association protects the Angolan colobus monkeys of the coast, which you can see crossing the road on rope bridges.
The Kongo Mosque
A small coral mosque dating from the 16th century, at the northern end of the beach road; it can be visited quickly in passing.

Tips
- Souvenir and ride sellers approach visitors on the beach: a polite, firm "no thank you" is enough, and prices are negotiable. For a day at sea, see the Wasini Island excursion and the Kisite-Mpunguti marine park. For another beach on the north coast, see Watamu or Malindi, and to combine safari and beach, our guide.
How to get there
By air to Ukunda (Diani) airport, a few kilometres from the beach, from Nairobi (about 1 hour); via Mombasa's Moi airport, about 35 km away (allow 1.5 to 2 hours by road depending on traffic and the Likoni crossing); or by the SGR train to Mombasa and then a transfer. On the spot: tuk-tuks, motorbike taxis (boda-boda) and taxis; agree the price before getting in.
