The Mombasa Carnival is the big street party of the Kenyan coast. It takes place in November and its highlight is the parade of floats, costumes and dancers that makes its way to Moi Avenue, the main street of the centre, with taarab and afropop music and craft stalls. It showcases the diversity of the city's communities (Swahili, Arab, Indian, peoples of the interior) and draws artists from across the country. Dates vary from year to year and official information is published late: we could not confirm the dates of the 2026 edition. Plan for November and check the programme with Mombasa County or the Kenyan tourism board before booking.

Tips
- Arrive early to find a spot on the pavement and bring water, a hat and sunscreen: it is hot and humid. The crowd attracts pickpockets: keep your phone and wallet in a closed pocket and leave valuables at the hotel. Book accommodation well in advance, as prices rise during the festival. Do not confuse it with the Mombasa International Cultural Festival, a separate event whose dates have varied, August in the past. For the city itself, see Mombasa. Information checked in October 2026, dates not confirmed.
How to get there
Moi Avenue, centre of Mombasa island, near the tusk arches. By taxi, Uber or Bolt; streets are closed to traffic during the parade, so get out a few streets away and finish on foot.
