Safari to Amboseli from Nairobi: 1 to 3 days, prices and where to stay

Updated on October 18, 2026

Amboseli can be visited from Nairobi in one day, in two days and one night, or in three days with two nights. The day trip is possible but very long: about 4 hours by road each way for a few hours in the park. Two days is the reasonable minimum, and three days lets you fit in two safaris in the morning light. The prices below come from operator offers found in October 2026; they vary a lot with the season, the vehicle, the group and the hotel. For the park itself, see the Amboseli National Park page.

Highlights

The morning safari

The morning safari

This is the best session for seeing elephants and a clear Kilimanjaro. Leave the lodge before sunrise, with a packed breakfast or a return for breakfast.

The Observation Hill viewpoint

This hill lets you get out of the vehicle and look down on the marshes. Ask your guide to stop there; it is one of the few places where you walk in the park.

Tips

  • Prices found, per person, excluding flights: day trip about USD 140 to 250 depending on the offer, often without the park entry fee; 2 days and 1 night about USD 860 to 1,180 depending on the lodge for a July 2026 offer; 3 days and 2 nights in a group from about USD 450 to 530 on a budget basis, and about USD 960 to 1,450 in a lodge, more in a private car in high season. Always ask whether the entry fee (USD 90 per adult for non-residents according to the current rates), meals, water and transfers are included. A camp outside the park costs less than a lodge inside, but adds travel morning and evening. Groups share a pop-up-roof minibus; a Land Cruiser-type 4x4 is more comfortable on the track. Choose an agency registered in Kenya, read recent reviews and avoid paying everything in cash in advance. To combine with another park, see the 3-day safari in Kenya.

How to get there

The operator picks you up at your Nairobi hotel, usually between 6 and 7 am, and brings you back on the last day. Allow about 4 hours by road. If you are short of time, a bush flight from Wilson airfield cuts the trip to under an hour, but costs much more: see flight or road for a safari in Kenya.

Opening hours

Best: June to October
Departure from Nairobi early in the morning (around 6 or 7 am), arrival in the park late morning, two safaris a day (morning and late afternoon); exact programme set at booking
