Hell's Gate is one of the few national parks in Kenya where you can walk or cycle among the animals. Red cliffs, volcanic rock towers, a narrow gorge and geothermal steam make for a spectacular landscape about 20 km from Lake Naivasha. You will see zebras, giraffes, buffalo, baboons and warthogs; big cats are rare or absent. A visit takes half a day to a full day on a bike rented at the gate.
Highlights

Ol Njorowa Gorge
A trail drops between red lava walls carved by water; visit with a local guide, who knows the routes and the hot-water spots.

The trail network
Signs mark the footpaths and bike tracks to the viewpoints; the main circuit is flat with a few climbs.
Fischer's Tower and Central Tower
Two volcanic monoliths overlooking the valley, the park's landmarks; the tracks lead to them easily.
The Olkaria geothermal field
Steam vents and power stations spread south of the park; a geothermal spa is nearby.

Tips
- Rent a bike at the gate or from a rental shop in Naivasha (check the brakes and tyres) and bring water and sunscreen: there is little shade. Keep your distance from buffalo and baboons, which may snatch a bag. KWS announced an adult non-resident fee of US$50 from October 2025 (up from US$26), but the increase was challenged in court: confirm it at the gate. See also Lake Naivasha and the Rift Valley.
How to get there
Elsa Gate is about 15 km from Naivasha town; allow 2 to 3 hours by road from Nairobi. Plan on a car with a driver or a taxi; there is no practical public transport to the gate.
