The Lamu Cultural Festival is the archipelago's big annual event: several days of dhow races, donkey races, dancing, Swahili poetry, swimming contests and crafts, held in the UNESCO-listed old town. It usually takes place in November, at the start of the high season, and draws thousands of Kenyan and foreign visitors. Dates change from year to year and no official announcement of the 2026 edition was found in October 2026: confirm them before booking.
Highlights

The dhow races
Wooden dhows with lateen sails race in the channel in front of the town. It is the most spectacular event, best watched from the waterfront or from a boat. Other dhow races take place at other times of the year, notably on New Year's Day.

The traditional sailing boats
Crews defend their colours with boats built by hand in the archipelago. Seeing a dhow under full sail off Lamu gives an idea of the maritime tradition that has linked the coast to Arabia and India for centuries.

Donkey races and contests
In town, donkey races, dances and Swahili poetry liven the squares. The exact programme varies: check it on the spot or with your accommodation. See also the old town of Lamu.

Tips
- The dates are not fixed. One tour operator advertised 25 to 29 November 2026 for its package, but those are its dates, not a county announcement: check with the Lamu County Government or the Kenya Tourism Board. Accommodation, especially in Shela and in town, is booked months ahead and prices rise. Budget accordingly, carry cash (M-Pesa is accepted in many places) and wear modest clothes. See the Lamu archipelago for security and transport.
How to get there
Fly to Manda airport (LAU) from Nairobi, Mombasa or Malindi, then take a boat to Lamu (about 10 to 15 minutes). Flights are in high demand during the festival: book early.
